The Ultimate Backyard Fire Pit Setup Guide

In the corner of a garden, the flames of a Black Wizard fire pit light up the fence and tiles. Small lanterns are around the edge of the garden while a set of solar light bulbs glow along the top of half of one side of the fence.

The best smokeless fire pit setup for quiet nights outdoors and hosting guests.

If you’re looking to upgrade your backyard setup, a smokeless fire pit genuinely changes the experience.

After using my Wizard Fire Pit for a while now, it’s become one of my favourite parts of slow evenings outside, winter hosting, and quiet nights with a coffee under the stars.

I originally discovered Wizard Fire Pits before my Dad gifted me one for my birthday, and it quickly became one of those rare products that actually lives up to the hype. The low smoke, clean design and overall experience completely changed the way I enjoy evenings outdoors.

So this guide covers my full backyard fire pit setup, including the accessories and simple upgrades I’d recommend for getting the most out of your Wizard Fire Pit.

But first, let’s set the mood.

I’ve created two Spotify playlists for an evening by the fire. Take your pick.

Fire it up - crack a cold one and enjoy these rock anthems!

Slow burn - just chill vibes to unwind.

Here’s my ultimate backyard fire pit setup

Wizard Fire Pit

At first glance, it just looks good. The matte black finish has a clean, modern feel that works in almost any outdoor space.

But the real magic is the smokeless secondary burn system. Air is drawn in through the bottom, heated inside the walls to around 500°C, then released through vents at the top where it reignites much of the smoke and gases from the fire. The result is a cleaner burn, stronger heat, and noticeably less smoke around the fire pit.

With a 4.9-star rating from more than 850 reviews, it’s clearly not just me who thinks Wizard Fire Pits have nailed the balance between design, performance and overall experience.

Seating

Keep it relaxed and comfortable. A mix of low outdoor chairs and cushions works perfectly, while an outdoor sofa setup is elite if you have the space. The goal is simple: make people want to stay around the fire longer.

Lighting

Subtle lighting works best. A few lanterns, solar lights or warm fairy lights help create ambience without competing with the fire itself.

Pro tip: If bugs usually ruin your evenings outdoors, place an electric UV bug zapper a few metres away from the fire pit. Most insects will head toward the UV light instead of the people around the fire.

Macpac Lightweight Chair is ideal for travelling with your fire pit.

At the end of the night, pop on the Metal Lid (for regular) and call it an evening

Ambience

A good playlist, a book, a warm (or cold) drink and a blanket. That’s really all you need. The rest is just slowing down and enjoying the fire.

Pro tip: Hardwoods such as Manuka, Kanuka, Oak or Applewood burn the cleanest and longest, but if you want bigger flames and a more dramatic fire, hardwood pellets work surprisingly well. Avoid Pine as it has a high resin content which causes it to burn with heavy black soot.

These fire pits have genuinely elevated my evenings outdoors.

If you’ve been looking for a smokeless fire pit that feels effortless to use, looks great, and creates an experience people naturally gather around, Wizard Fire Pits are well worth checking out.
