How to change hard drive icons on macOS

If you spend a lot of time on your Mac, your desktop becomes a working space. And like any workspace, a few intentional tweaks can make it feel more organised.

One of the simplest upgrades? Customising the icon for your hard drives.

What you’ll need

• A Mac running macOS

• An image you’d like to use as the icon (square images work best)

Step-by-step: change a hard drive icon using drag and drop

1. Open your image

Find the image you want to use and open it in Finder or put it on your desktop.

2. Get info on your hard drive

• Go to your desktop or Finder.

• Right-click the hard drive you want to customise.

• Select Get Info. A small info window will appear.

3. Drag the image onto the icon

At the top left of the Get Info window, you’ll see the current hard drive icon.

• Click and drag the image from Finder.

• Drop it directly onto that small icon. As soon as you release it, the icon updates.

4. Enjoy the upgrade

Your hard drive now has a custom icon.

Repeat this for other drives if you want a consistent or colour-coded setup.
